Unit 4.1 Discussion: Critiquing Presentations

Unit 4.1 Discussion: Critiquing Presentations

· Some areas to note in your critique: an engaging introduction, smooth transitions, credible evidence to support main ideas, concise conclusion with a memorable ending, varied tone of voice, eye contact and other body language.
· In response to your peers, comment on any similarities you shared in your critique of the speeches. (Please respond to at least two classmates’ posts.)

SOPHIA’S POST:
The first speech, “First World Problems,” by Sarah, was organized, starting with an example of the topic of her speech. This captured the audience’s attention as this piece of information was humorous. Throughout her speech, she kept the audience’s attention span on her speech by continuously adding humorous examples. This reaction allows the listeners to follow the main idea throughout the speech. As for the delivery of the speech, I feel as though pauses should be more exaggerated, and the pace should be slowed. Also, the tone of voice could be switched from time to time, as this video reminded me of news reporting at times. My engagement with the speech went up as the speaker changed positions on stage and used hand motions and facial expressions.
Alicia’s speech, “How Guinea Pigs Help Autistic Children,” was organized by starting with a fact about a child relevant to her topic. This gave the audience a connection and a better understanding of the main idea of the speech. I noted that she stated what her speech would consist of and transitioned using data and connecting them with evidence throughout the speech. The delivery of her speech was excellent. She remained in a positive, uplifting tone and voiced her opinion at a reasonable volume. I think the pace was not perfect, but it was slowed enough that you had time to hear everything correctly. My engagement was at a high level throughout this speech because of the volume and tone of her voice. Also, the movement across the stage went well with her voice. Another small detail I enjoyed was how she incorporated the picture into her speech a second time; this was done as an audience eye-catcher.
Both informative speeches did well at planning and organizing the speech’s structure prior to the presentation. This is shown when the audience is engaged and reacting. Also, quickly understanding and being able to flow with the information I received shows in another way that the presentations were organized to be easy to follow and listen to.
ASHLEY’S POST:
In the video “First World Problems” she mentions how people use hashtags and think that they are stating problems, when they really aren’t problems. How social media or wifi could possibly be the problem in the world. Their is certain social media sites that are causing problems with all different situations, and all different ages of individuals. The growth of ” hashtag first world problems” has been easily foreseen. There is hashtag presence, hashtag speech, hashtag topic, and many more to make the hashtag promise. This vide gives people a better outlook that their is more going on in the world than just social media.
In the video “How Guinea Pigs Help Autistic Children” I feel like this is a great way to help the individuals take care of something. This is a way to keep them calm in certain daily struggles that they might be facing. Having difficulties with socializing and communication is hard enough, and as mentioned the guinea pig is a calming solution. This could definitely be a way to get the individual involved in a routine. Where they can use daily life skills to help build communication skills. Letting the individual choose an activity, sport, or taking car of an animal allows them to be open in their own ways. I have personally worked with autistic individuals. In the begging I read their care plans that way I get to know them, their interests, and their goals that they would like to achieve one day. Then I will go above and beyond to help them achieve and reach they goals. These individuals do not like change, they prefer a consistent schedule and daily routine. Giving them their space and having good body mechanics while communicating to each other is definitely key point. Having eye contact makes them feel like you are listening to then and are paying attention to what they have to say. Engaging them into a new change definitely has to be a smooth change and nothing rational. Also I treat others how I would like to be treated. When speaking make sure that you use a calm voice, no loud noises, or different transitions happening without a smooth transition. Honestly try not doing this, this could cause triggers in the situation that is occurring.

ANTHONY’S POST:
Hello Everyone,
Mohammad new bakery business can be a profitable business with the right plan. Whatever the bakery is delivering, from cookies to donuts and coffee, has to be fit for the purpose to the customers. The pastries need to be hot and fresh and looks good. The items need to be available as the customers need them, and provide the right goods  to meet customers demand. A bakery should be in an area where there is plenty of morning traffic, for most customers will get coffee and donuts on their way to work. The bakery needs to be opened on time and ready to serve customers. Some customers will be focused on the price, while other customers will be focused on fast service.  Also, some customers will focus on the quality of the pastries through personal experience or word of mouth. Convincing customers that what you have for sale will deliver that value. Marketing is about communicating the strategy and value proposition to a customer in a way that will make them want to buy from you.
KAITLYN’S POST:
Mohammad’s business has a lot of potential. It is great that he has invested so much time in the product which are the cookies but for his business to grow, he needs to invest time in other areas as well. Placing his store on the main street of his town or another is a great idea because that’s a prime location. There’s so much traffic being driven into a main street in a town and many people make their way to their town’s main streets daily. Many towns like to have festivals and events on their main street that highlight small businesses in the area, and he would have the opportunity to integrate his business with the people of his town. Having a business on main street would be more expensive in his town because as I mentioned, there’s a lot of traffic but he would make that money back in his revenue. People are drawn to deals that they can get their money’s worth. An example, I used to work at a bagel store where after 3, a dozen bagels was 4.99. We would do this before closing because we needed to get rid of excess bagels while also finding a way to make a profit off them. A similar plan would work very well for Mohammed. An hour or two before close, making cookies half off or doing a dozen cookies half off would drive a lot of people into the store, making profit and clearing up the days inventory. Social media is our biggest tool in today’s age of marketing. Setting up socials for his store and creating a buzz online will help him cultivate a following that wants to support his business. Connecting with his towns local media is a great way to establish a presence in the town and getting his name out there.
NATORIA’S POST:
I would advice him that his bakery product need to be able to clearly define what it is he is offering. If he is selling cookies, are the made from an old fashion are a simple recipe. Once Mohammed clarified the ins and outs of his product, he’ll need to attach an appropriate price tag to it. Price needs to relate both cost involved in producing cookies and the perceived value of the product by his customers. If your cookies etc and price are out of sync, he is not  going to sell as well as he would like. Place relies on the first two P’s, and again relates to the cookies etc perceived value. Mohammed needs to distribute his cookies etc through the right channels to reach the right market, with the right price, at the right time. in order, to promote his bakery he needs to know how his bakery can be different from the others. He needs to include a media platforms he will use for advertising, as well as other forms of promotion such as personal selling, sales promotion and out of house advertising. How you promote your cookies etc is crucial to its success.

SEYMOUR’S POST:
Even though that Mohammad has this great recipe for a great cookie and has been making them for his family and friends it does not matter in the marketing world today. Think about this for a minute and look at how many cookie companies are out there. For example, Famous Amous took a lot of planning and disappointment notes to talk about failure. Mohammad has to include the  4P’s in this grand opening. There is a new shopping mall which should starts construction in the following months let’s get in on the ground floor. Build a wedsite and prerequisite the site as a demo with pictures of the products that will be in the store. Convinced the viewer that your cookie is the best let them know your product is the purple cow. Research the price of local cookies vendors in the immediate area and compare to make your price competitive. When the store is ready for the grand open we will give out mini samples of all the products on the menu. Give the store a very unique look with a great drive-up appeal.
